Why we left its tide pools off
The short version
- The Spreckels Organ plays a free concert in Balboa Park every Sunday at 2 p.m., rain or shine.
- Old Town San Diego State Historic Park charges no admission and has free lots with a 4-hour limit.
- Chicano Park in Barrio Logan has more than 100 murals and became a National Historic Landmark in December 2016.
- Balboa Park parking is paid through 2026, but non-residents get 3 free hours at Lower Inspiration Point, and the city says paid parking ends January 1, 2027.
- The Children's Pool beach in La Jolla closes December 15 to May 15 for harbor seal pupping season.
Plenty of "free" lists pad themselves with places that charge at the gate or quietly need a $16 ticket. Everything below costs nothing to enter as of October 2026. Where there is a catch, usually parking, it is in the table and in the write-up.

Balboa Park: gardens and the Sunday organ
- 1. The Botanical Building and open gardens. The lath-covered Botanical Building holds more than 2,100 permanent plants and is open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge. Next door, the Alcazar Garden is open 24 hours. Skip the Japanese Friendship Garden if you want free: it is $16 for adults.
- 2. The Spreckels Organ concert. The outdoor pavilion hosts a free concert every Sunday at 2 p.m., rain or shine. Special free evening shows this month include a Halloween program on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
Coast and wildlife
- 3. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. 68 acres of carved bluffs, arches and sea caves along Point Loma's western edge. Park on the street or in the small lots near Ladera Street, Luscomb Point and Osprey Street. There are no restrooms, and the edges crumble, so stay back from them.
- 4. Seals and sea lions in La Jolla. Harbor seals haul out at the Children's Pool year-round, and sea lions gather near La Jolla Cove. The Children's Pool beach is closed December 15 to May 15 for pupping season. Read the rules for seeing seals and sea lions and where to park near the Cove before you go.
- 5. Whale watching from shore. Gray whales pass San Diego mostly from December through April. Sunset Cliffs and Mount Soledad are free vantage points. The well-known overlook at Cabrillo National Monument is not free: entry is $20 per car. More in how to see whales from land.
Views and history
- 6. Mount Soledad. The veterans memorial at the summit is free and open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with 360-degree views from the ocean to downtown. Parking at the top is limited; a larger lot is about a five-minute walk downhill.
- 7. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. No admission fee. The visitor center and select museums are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. The free lots have a 4-hour maximum.
- 8. Chicano Park murals. More than 100 murals cover about seven acres in Barrio Logan, San Diego's oldest Mexican-American neighborhood. The park was named a National Historic Landmark in December 2016. Chicano Park Day falls on the Saturday closest to April 22 each year.
Markets and hangouts
- 9. Little Italy Mercato. Every Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., along West Date Street from west of Kettner Boulevard to Front Street. Free to walk and browse. A smaller Wednesday market runs too. See San Diego farmers markets by day.
- 10. Liberty Station. The former Naval Training Center has free 3-hour parking for people visiting its businesses, plus open lawns and an arts district to wander. Read what to know about Liberty Station Public Market.
Want a fire on the sand after dark? Rules and locations are in beach bonfires and fire rings. City rules ban fires outside containers and between midnight and 5 a.m.
