  • San Diego Bay Parade of Lights: Sundays Dec 13 and 20, 5:30 p.m. from Shelter Island to Coronado Ferry Landing; 2026 theme "Liberty Lights the Bay – Cheers to 250 Years!"
  • Mission Bay Parade of Lights: Saturday Dec 12, 5:30–7:30 p.m., opened by SeaWorld fireworks.
  • The 47th Holiday Bowl: Monday, Dec 28, 2 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium (ticketed).
  • Sunset is about 4:42 p.m. in early December, so evening events are fully dark by 5:15.

San Diego doesn't do snow, so it does lights — on buildings, on the water and on boats. The three big ones are free. Here's the December 2026 calendar, with the timing details that decide whether you have a good night or spend it looking for parking.

December Nights in Balboa Park

The City calls it "the City of San Diego's largest free holiday festival," and the crowd numbers back that up: more than 350,000 people over two days. Expect food from around the world at the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages, music on multiple stages, and — traditionally — free evening admission at several Balboa Park museums. Museum participation and hours are announced closer to the date; in 2025 the Natural History Museum and Fleet Science Center were among those open free.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights

Decorated boats leave the south end of Shelter Island at 5:30 p.m., pass Harbor Island, the Embarcadero and Seaport Village, loop by the pier at Cesar Chavez Park and finish at Coronado's Ferry Landing. The whole parade takes about 60–90 minutes to pass any one spot. This year's theme nods to the U.S. semiquincentennial: "Liberty Lights the Bay – Cheers to 250 Years!"

  • A caution on Mission Bay: the December 12 date comes from the San Diego Tourism Authority's listing. Discover Mission Bay's own event page still said "December TBD" when we checked on September 29 — confirm before you go.
  • Bring a jacket. December evenings on the water drop into the 50s.
  • Check the forecast: in an El Niño December, a storm can postpone a parade or wash out a night.
  • Holiday Bowl week also brings the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade, billed as "America's Largest Balloon Parade" — free to watch streetside; check holidaybowl.com for the date.
