Do you have to pay to get into Balboa Park?

4 min read Checked September 8, 2026

No. The park itself is free and open to everyone — the gardens, the grounds, the architecture along El Prado. The museums inside it charge separately, and the Zoo is a different institution entirely.

The short version

  • Balboa Park is a public park. Walking in, the gardens and the grounds cost nothing.
  • The 16 museums inside it each charge their own admission, and are not covered by any park-wide free entry.
  • The Balboa Park Explorer Pass bundles museums three ways: one day and four museums, seven days and 16 museums, or an annual pass.
  • The San Diego Zoo is inside the park but is a separate institution — no park pass includes it.
  • Parking is its own question, and until January 1, 2027 it is not free either.

This trips people up because Balboa Park does not behave like the attractions it contains. There is no gate and no entry fee — it is a public park, and one of the largest urban cultural parks in the country. You can spend an entire day there on the architecture, the gardens and the lawns without paying anyone anything.

What costs money is the institutions inside it, and they price independently of each other.

The Explorer programme is run by Balboa Park. Current prices are on the pass site — we don't quote them here because they aren't published on the landing page and we'd rather link you to the real number than repeat a stale one.

What a genuinely free day looks like

  • The gardens and grounds — the Botanical Building, the lily pond, the rose and desert gardens, the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture along El Prado.
  • The free tram between the lots and the Cultural District, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., every 10–15 minutes.
  • Guided tours from the Visitors Center, which are free with a suggested $5 donation.
  • Resident free days — individual museums rotate free admission for San Diego County residents, which is a genuinely different offer from the Explorer Pass.
