Which Balboa Park museums are free on Tuesdays?
Checked August 26, 2026
They rotate by week of the month — and it's free for San Diego city and county residents and active military only, with photo ID showing your address. Visitors from out of town pay full price.
Nearly every travel guide gets this wrong by presenting "Free Museum Tuesdays" as free-for-everyone. It isn't. The discount is a resident benefit for San Diego city and county residents and active-duty military, verified with a photo ID showing a local address at the door. If you're visiting from out of town, you pay regular admission on these days like any other.
The free days rotate through Balboa Park's museums by which Tuesday it is in the month:
1st Tuesday: Fleet Science Center; San Diego Natural History Museum (films excluded)
2nd Tuesday: San Diego Air & Space Museum (special exhibitions excluded); The Veterans Museum; Comic-Con Museum (December excluded)
3rd Tuesday: San Diego Museum of Art (special exhibitions excluded); Japanese Friendship Garden; Mingei International Museum; The Old Globe (behind-the-scenes tours only)
4th Tuesday: San Diego Automotive Museum (September and December excluded); Museum of Us (December excluded; California Tower tours $10)
5th Tuesday: Regular admission applies
2nd Thursday: San Diego Model Railroad Museum (December excluded)
If you're a visitor, don't plan your Balboa Park day around this — it won't save you anything, and several exclusions apply even for residents (special exhibitions, films, December in some cases). Check each museum's own page before you go, since exclusions change.
