1. Oscar's Mexican Seafood (Pacific Beach and Hillcrest)

Two small, busy counters. On Oscar's current menu the battered fish taco is $3.75 and the smoked fish taco $7.50, and the smoked one is what it's known for. 746 Emerald St in Pacific Beach, 646 University Ave in Hillcrest. Seating is minimal at both.

2. South Beach Bar & Grille (Ocean Beach)

A bar at the beach end of Newport Avenue that has served the same mahi taco since 1992. 5059 Newport Ave. It's a bar first, so expect a crowd on weekends.

3. Fish Guts (Barrio Logan)

Chef Pablo Becker's Logan Avenue spot opened in 2023, and San Diego Magazine named it a critic's pick for best fish tacos in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Order the blackened swordfish. It's a block from Chicano Park, so pair the two. 2222 Logan Ave.

4. Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill (Mission Hills and Ocean Beach)

Half fish market, half counter, and it bills its fish tacos as award-winning. The original is at 3667 India St in Mission Hills, right under the flight path into the airport; the second location is at 5083 Santa Monica Ave in Ocean Beach.

5. Mitch's Seafood (Point Loma)

On the harbor at 1403 Scott St, open daily from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., which makes it the one place on this list for a fish taco before 9 a.m.

6. TJ Oyster Bar (Bonita)

A South Bay favorite the Coronado Times summed up as "Baja in Bonita," known for its smoked tuna taco alongside Baja-style fish tacos. 4246 Bonita Rd. It's the farthest from the coast on this list, so pair it with a Chula Vista or border-area errand.

7. El Pescador (La Jolla)

Technically a fish market with a counter, at 634 Pearl St, and better known for fish tortas than tacos. It earns the spot as the low-key option in La Jolla, where most seafood comes with a view and a markup.
