Can I bring my dog to a restaurant patio in San Diego?
On the patio, often yes — California has allowed dogs in outdoor dining areas since 2015, but only if the restaurant chooses to. Inside, only trained service animals.

The short version
- California has allowed pet dogs in restaurants' outdoor dining areas since January 1, 2015, under Health and Safety Code section 114259.5.
- It's the owner's choice: the law permits dogs on patios but doesn't require restaurants to accept them.
- Dogs must be leashed or in a carrier, kept off chairs and benches, and enter by an outdoor entrance.
- Staff can't touch dogs on duty, and any dog food or water must come in single-use containers.
- Indoors, only trained service animals are allowed — not pets or emotional-support animals.
San Diego is a dog town, and plenty of restaurant patios welcome them. That's legal because of a 2014 state law that took effect January 1, 2015 and amended the California Retail Food Code. Before that, health rules technically kept dogs out of food facilities altogether.

The conditions the restaurant has to meet
- There's an outdoor entrance, so dogs don't walk through the indoor restaurant.
- Dogs stay on a leash or in a carrier, under the owner's control.
- Dogs aren't allowed on chairs, benches, seats or other fixtures.
- Any food or water for dogs comes in single-use disposable containers.
- Staff on duty can't touch the dogs, and food isn't prepared in the outdoor dining area.
- Any mess is cleaned and sanitized.

Where dogs are easiest
Breweries, beach-town cafés and patio-heavy neighborhoods like Ocean Beach, North Park and Liberty Station tend to be the most welcoming. For the beach itself, see Can I take my dog to the beach in San Diego?.
