Where are the best tacos in San Diego (not fish tacos)?

This page is for adobada, carne asada and birria. For battered fish and shrimp, see where locals eat fish tacos. We didn't add our own vote. We pulled picks from San Diego Magazine's Best Restaurants (critics' and readers' picks, 2025 and 2026), the MICHELIN Guide (2026 Bib Gourmand list and its October 2026 Southern California taco round-up), SanDiegoRed's 2025 guide to Mexican restaurants, Axios San Diego's best dishes of 2025 and Yelp's Top 100 taco lists. Then we counted which shops show up more than once and checked that each was open in 2025 or 2026.

Which San Diego taco shops show up on the most best-of lists?

Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria in Nestor shows up on the most lists: San Diego Magazine critics named it Best Tacos in 2026, SanDiegoRed included it in 2025, and Yelp ranked it the No. 1 taco spot in the U.S. in 2022. Tacos El Gordo is the crowd favorite: San Diego Magazine readers voted it Best Tacos in 2025 and again in 2026. Lola 55 has the Michelin backing. The guide's inspectors say it stands a cut above the city's other taquerias.

Where should I go for adobada, carne asada or birria?

Birria is beef or goat stewed in chile broth. The tacos are usually dipped, griddled and served with a cup of that broth (consomé) for dunking. In San Diego Magazine's 2026 poll, Birria El Rey won both the critics' and readers' votes for Best Birria. It added a sit-down restaurant at 1128 25th St in Golden Hill in late 2025, and the original walk-up stand at 1015 25th St stayed open. Mike's Red Tacos started as a food truck around 2021 and now has three San Diego shops, open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday (its site, Nov 3, 2026).
