Can I take my dog to the beach in San Diego?
Yes, but not in the middle of the day. City beaches bar dogs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. between April and October, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between November and March. Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island are off-leash all day.
- April – October
- No dogs 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- November – March
- No dogs 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Off-leash, all day
- Dog Beach (OB) and Fiesta Island
- Outside those hours
- Leashed, and clean up
The short version
- City beaches: no dogs 9 a.m.–6 p.m. from April 1 to October 31, and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. from November 1 to March 31.
- Outside those hours dogs are allowed but must be leashed, and you clean up after them.
- Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island in Mission Bay are the two all-day, leash-free exceptions.
- Service animals are exempt from the time restrictions.
- Coronado, Del Mar, Encinitas and the rest are separate cities with their own rules — do not assume.
The short answer is that San Diego is a good dog city with a firm rule about the middle of the day. Dogs are barred from city beaches through the busiest hours, and the cutoff moves with the season — which is the part people forget in November when the sun sets two hours earlier.
The two seasonal windows
City of San Diego beaches. Outside these hours dogs are welcome on leash. The restriction is by time of day, not a ban.
So in practice
- Early morning is the reliable window. Before 9 a.m. works all year round, and it is the nicest time on the sand anyway.
- Evenings shift with the season. From April, after 6 p.m.; from November, after 4 p.m.
- Leash and bag. Outside the two off-leash areas, dogs must be leashed and owners must clean up.
- Service animals are exempt from the hour restrictions.
The two places with no rules at all
Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island in Mission Bay are designated leash-free, all day. Dog Beach is ocean surf at the north end of Ocean Beach; Fiesta Island is flat, enclosed, calm bay water and a lot of open ground, which makes it the better option for a dog that runs and a worse one for a dog that wants waves.
And the usual boundary warning: Coronado, Imperial Beach, Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside are separate cities with their own municipal codes. Del Mar in particular runs its own seasonal dog zones that look nothing like San Diego's. Check the city whose beach you are standing on.
