No. Alcohol is prohibited on City of San Diego beaches, the cliffs, walkways, park areas and the adjacent parking lots. Glass containers and smoking are banned in the same areas.

The short version

  • Alcohol is not allowed on the beach, the cliffs, the walkways, the park areas or the adjacent parking lots.
  • Glass containers are banned in exactly the same areas — this catches far more people than the alcohol rule does.
  • Smoking is prohibited there too.
  • The ban is city-wide and long-standing, not a seasonal or event-specific restriction.

This is the single most common assumption visitors get wrong about San Diego beaches, usually because they have been to a beach somewhere else in the world where a cold beer is the entire point. The City is explicit: alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the beach, cliffs, walkways, park areas or adjacent parking lots.

It applies to the whole city coastline — Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla — and the boundary is generous. "Adjacent parking lots" means the tailgate-in-the-lot workaround is not a workaround. Enforcement is real and visible on summer weekends and around holidays.

  • Smoking is also prohibited on the beach, cliffs, walkways, park areas and adjacent lots.
  • Dogs are restricted by time of day, not banned — no dogs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April through October, or 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November through March, and leashed outside those hours. Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island in Mission Bay are the exceptions.
  • Licensed venues are a different matter. Restaurants and bars with their own permitted patios along the boardwalk serve alcohol legally; the rule is about the public beach, not the businesses on it.
