  • La Jolla sea cave kayak tours take about 2 hours, from about $59 per kayak
  • From late November to Dec. 10, sunset comes as early as 4:42 p.m., so book view dinners early

Romance in San Diego mostly means water and sunsets, so this plan gives each day one area and one sunset. It reworks our general 3-day itinerary for two, using prices from our verified guides, checked on November 5, 2026. Base yourself downtown or in Little Italy; see where to stay downtown.

Day 1: Coronado by boat

  1. 01

    Morning: ferry across the bay

Take the Flagship ferry from Broadway Pier (hourly) or the Convention Center (every 30 minutes): $9 each way, about 15 minutes. Ferry details.

  2. 02

    Afternoon: bikes and beach

Ride or walk from the Ferry Landing to Coronado Central Beach. Why the sand sparkles.

  3. 03

    Sunset: the Hotel del

You don't need a room to walk the grounds and the beach out front. Arriving by ferry avoids the $39-for-two-hours garage. Visiting the Del.

Day 2: La Jolla

  1. 01

    Morning: kayak the sea caves

Tours launch from La Jolla Shores and paddle to seven sea caves; about 2 hours, from about $59 per kayak, so a tandem is one price for two. Kayak guide.

  2. 02

Midday: the Cove and the seals

Watch sea lions from the sidewalk above La Jolla Cove, staying 50 yards back; Children's Pool beach closes Dec. 15 to May 15 for pupping. Rules.

  3. 03

    Sunset: Mount Soledad, then dinner

Watch from the 822-foot summit, then book The Marine Room or George's at the Cove. Restaurants with a view.

Day 3: Balboa Park and Little Italy

  1. 01

    Morning: Balboa Park gardens

Wander El Prado and the gardens; the Japanese Friendship Garden is the quiet one.

  2. 02

    Afternoon: Little Italy

Lunch and a walk through Little Italy, or Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station.

  3. 03

    Sunset and nightcap

Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma for the light, then a rooftop downtown. Sunset spots and rooftop bars.

Have a fourth day? Couples who like wine can cross the border to Valle de Guadalupe, about 1.5 to 2 hours plus the border wait; a tour skips the Mexican insurance hassle.
