For a first tattoo or a walk-in, the San Diego shops with the strongest 2025–26 record are Buju Tattoo in Mission Hills (San Diego Magazine readers' top tattoo studio in 2024 and 2025), Chapter One Tattoo in Ocean Beach and Guru Tattoo in Pacific Beach and Little Italy. Expect a shop minimum of $100–$200 and a non-refundable deposit for booked custom work.

The short version

  • Buju Tattoo (914 W Washington St, Mission Hills) won San Diego Magazine's readers' poll for tattoo studio in 2024 and 2025.
  • Shop minimums seen Nov 3, 2026: $100 at Guru Tattoo, $200 at Chapter One Tattoo in Ocean Beach.
  • Chapter One (Ocean Beach) and Guru (Pacific Beach, Little Italy) both say they take walk-ins every day.
  • California Penal Code 653 makes tattooing anyone under 18 a misdemeanor, even with a parent's consent.
  • Every artist must register each year with the County's Department of Environmental Health and Quality.

San Diego has hundreds of tattoo artists, so we started from named sources rather than star ratings: San Diego Magazine's readers' polls (2024, 2025, 2026), its 2024 list of ten local artists, and shops' own websites. We only kept shops we could confirm were operating in 2025 or 2026, and we checked each shop's minimum, deposit and walk-in rules on its own site on November 3, 2026.

Chapter One Tattoo on Newport Avenue has the widest range: its site lists black and grey, blackwork, American and Japanese traditional, neo-traditional, Polynesian, color realism, fine line and single-needle work. It opens 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, and says walk-ins are welcome. If you're staying near the beach and want something the same day, start here.

No San Diego shop we checked publishes an hourly rate; they quote by artist, size, placement and color. The national 2026 ranges above come from Tommy's Supplies, a tattoo-supply retailer, which says minimums in most US markets run $80–$200 and that large metros charge 20–40% more than its baseline. Treat those as a starting point for budgeting, not a San Diego quote. Remember to budget a tip too; see how much to tip in San Diego.

How to check a shop before you sit down

A five-minute safety check

  1. 01

    Bring ID and be 18+

California Penal Code 653 makes tattooing anyone under 18 a misdemeanor, and the County's Safe Body Art Act summary says parental consent doesn't change that. Guru's FAQ asks for a valid state or federal ID.

  2. 02

    Ask about the County permit

Under the Safe Body Art Act (in effect since July 1, 2012), every facility needs a County health permit and every artist must register with the Department of Environmental Health and Quality each year, including yearly bloodborne-pathogen training. County inspectors check facilities.

  3. 03

    Watch the setup

The County's summary of the law requires single-use needles, gloves, a hand-wash sink, a sharps container within reach and plastic sleeves on machine parts the artist touches.

  4. 04

    Expect paperwork

You should be given a consent form and a health questionnaire, and written aftercare instructions. A shop that skips these is skipping state law.

  5. 05

    Plan the healing

Most tattoos need about two weeks before swimming. Read swimming after a tattoo in San Diego before you book the week before a beach trip.
