SAN DIEGO TIPS

What are the best breweries in San Diego, and where should a visitor start?

6 min read Checked November 3, 2026 Report a correction

Start in a walkable cluster: North Park around 30th Street (Fall Brewing, Mike Hess), Little Italy (Ballast Point, Stone's Kettner tap room, Karl Strauss downtown), Ocean Beach (Pizza Port, Mike Hess) or Miramar, called 'Beeramar' (AleSmith, Pure Project, Fall). Some famous names have closed or moved recently, so check the list below. Stone's Escondido World Bistro closes November 13, 2026, and Ballast Point's Miramar restaurant closed in December 2025.

The short version

  • The San Diego Brewers Guild says the region has more than 150 independent craft breweries (sdbeer.com, Nov 3, 2026).
  • A dozen San Diego County breweries closed in 2025 and only five opened, per Axios San Diego (March 4, 2026).
  • Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido closes Nov 13, 2026, and is set to reopen later under founders Greg Koch and Steve Wagner (CalMatters).
  • San Diego Beer Week runs November 6-15, 2026 (San Diego Brewers Guild).
  • Pints cost about $7.50-$10 at the big names in 2026: Stone $7.50-$9, Ballast Point $8-$10, AleSmith about $8 (Axios).

San Diego has plenty of breweries: the San Diego Brewers Guild counts more than 150 independent craft breweries in the region. The tricky part in 2026 is that many have closed. Axios San Diego reported that a dozen breweries in the county closed in 2025 and only five opened, as costs rose faster than prices. So we built this list the other way around. We started with the famous names and kept only the taprooms whose own websites list current hours (checked November 3, 2026) or that 2025-2026 news reports confirm are open.

North Park is the easiest to explore on foot. Fall Brewing's tap room is on 30th Street, and Blind Lady Ale House on Adams Avenue was San Diego Magazine's readers' pick for best brewpub in both 2025 and 2026. Little Italy has Ballast Point (2215 India St) and Stone's Kettner tap room (1202 Kettner Blvd), with Karl Strauss a few blocks away at 1157 Columbia St. Miramar has the biggest names, but its taprooms sit in industrial parks spread over a few miles, so plan on rideshare.

How do I get to San Diego breweries without driving?

Walk the clusters and use rideshare between them. An MTS bus or trolley ride costs $3, and the day pass costs $7 (sdmts.com, Nov 3, 2026). See the 2026 fare change and whether you need a car. For Miramar, plan on rideshare or a tour: Brewery Tours of San Diego runs public and private bus tours. Its homepage doesn't post prices, so call 619-961-7999 for a quote. The cheapest pint deal we found is at Blind Lady Ale House, with $6 beers until 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (its site, Nov 3, 2026).

See these on the full San Diego map
  • Kids and dogs: rules differ by taproom. Societe says it is dog-friendly; Blind Lady keeps pets outside. For more, see dog-friendly restaurants and bars.
  • Flying home? Stone runs an Airport Outpost at Terminal 2, Gate 36, open 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.
  • Vista says it has more breweries per capita than any U.S. city (Downtown Vista). Mother Earth has moved out of downtown to Thibodo Road, so plan on driving there.
