SAN DIEGO TIPS

What are the best things to do in San Diego with kids, by age?

6 min read Checked November 3, 2026 Report a correction

Match the stop to the age: toddlers do best at the New Children's Museum ($20 per child) and free Balboa Park playgrounds, kids 5-10 at Birch Aquarium, the USS Midway and winter tide pools, and tweens and teens at Belmont Park's Giant Dipper and a La Jolla sea-cave kayak tour. Every age band has a free option, and kids 15 and under get into Cabrillo National Monument free.

The fastest way to plan San Diego with kids is by age, because the same stop can thrill a 4-year-old and bore a 14-year-old. Below we sort named places into three age bands, each with a paid pick, a free pick and prices we checked on November 3, 2026. For a first-trip overview see our top 5 for a first visit, and for the big zoo decision see Zoo vs. Safari Park.
