5 min read Checked November 3, 2026 Report a correction

The coffee shops San Diego critics and locals name most often are Bird Rock Coffee Roasters (San Diego Magazine readers' pick for best roaster in 2025 and 2026), Mostra Coffee (critics' pick 2026), Cafe Moto in Barrio Logan (critics' pick 2025), and newer cafes Muri in North Park, Torque in City Heights and Provecho! in Logan Heights. If you need to work on a laptop, The Infatuation points to Sine Wave in Ocean Beach. Mnemonic in Bankers Hill limits indoor tables to one hour.

The short version

  • Bird Rock Coffee Roasters won San Diego Magazine's readers' vote for best roaster in 2025 and 2026 and runs 11 cafes.
  • Mostra Coffee was SD Magazine's 2026 critics' pick and also appears on KPBS's 2025 list.
  • Torque Coffee was the most-mentioned shop in Fresh Cup's April 2026 poll of San Diego coffee recommendations.
  • Mnemonic in Bankers Hill (2604 Fifth Ave) has a one-hour limit at its indoor tables (The Infatuation, Aug 24, 2026).
  • James Coffee Co.'s Little Italy cafe is listed as re-opening in November 2026 (its site, Nov 3, 2026).

We didn't add our own vote. We compared five named lists: San Diego Magazine's Best Restaurants (best coffee roaster, 2025 and 2026), The Infatuation's 'Best Coffee Shops in San Diego' (August 24, 2026), KPBS's 18 best cafes of 2025 (December 11, 2025) and Fresh Cup Magazine's April 2026 call for San Diego recommendations, which got more than 100 replies. Then we counted which shops appear more than once and confirmed each address on the shop's own site or a 2026 list.
