What you will see

Walk along the 11 walls and read the individual veterans plaques, then climb the brick steps up to the cross. Six curved walls of black granite plaques were added in 2000 and five more in 2012, according to the American Legion, and the plaques honor veterans from the Revolutionary War to the present. The official site also notes the walls are open to everyone and the surrounding lawns work for a picnic lunch.

Getting there and sunset. Put 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive (at Via Capri) into your map app; the official page links to Google Maps and does not publish turn-by-turn directions. Because the memorial faces the Pacific to the west and the gates stay open until 10 p.m., you can arrive before sunset and stay after dark. We could not confirm how full the small lot gets on clear evenings, so plan on the lower lot and the short walk up. Check our sunset times guide, since clocks fall back on Sunday, Nov 1.

Haze and marine layer can hide the view, so check the sky before you drive up.
