The short version

  • San Diego Public Library cards are free for California residents, San Diego property owners and military stationed in San Diego County; others pay $32.50 a year.
  • Apply in person with a photo ID; a digital card for county residents works for 30 days until you convert it at a branch.
  • Discover & Go lets San Diego residents 16+ with a permanent card reserve free attraction passes, two active reservations at a time.
  • Participating attractions include the New Children's Museum, Museum of Us, San Diego Museum of Art and Children's Discovery Museum.
  • New passes are released on the 1st of each month, first come, first served.

Most people get a library card for books. In San Diego, the more valuable perk might be the museum passes: a free card can save a family real money on a Balboa Park day.

How to get free museum passes

  1. 01

    Get a permanent card

Visit any branch with a photo ID (and proof of address if your ID doesn't show it). The card number starts with 01336. Temporary and student cards don't qualify.

  2. 02

Log in to Discover & Go

Go to sandiego.discoverandgo.net with your card number.

  3. 03

    Book on the 1st

New passes drop on the first of each month and go fast. You can hold two reservations and book up to three months ahead.

  4. 04

    Bring ID

Show the pass and a photo ID matching the cardholder.

  • Borrowing: up to 100 items; ebooks and audiobooks five at a time.
  • County residents outside the city: the County Library runs its own Discover & Go with its own card.
  • Related: some Balboa Park museums are also free for residents on rotating Tuesdays: here's how that works.
