Where do I actually park at La Jolla Cove?

On the street, for free. La Jolla has no parking meters at all — it isn't one of the city's parking districts. The problem is supply, not cost, and the paid garages a few blocks inland are $5 all day.

The short version

  • There are no parking meters at La Jolla Cove. La Jolla is not one of the City's seven Community Parking Districts.
  • City beach parking is free citywide, and a council ordinance to bar fees at 50+ beach and bay lots cleared committee in August 2026.
  • Village garages on Prospect, Girard, Ivanhoe, Fay and Wall run about $5 all day by online reservation, roughly $10 on holiday weekends.
  • A disabled placard allows free parking at any California meter for unlimited time under Vehicle Code 22511.5, and overrides posted time limits.
  • Time-limited zones are not enforced on eleven City holidays — but enforcement still patrols the beaches on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends.

The question almost everyone asks is what the meters cost. There are no meters. The City of San Diego operates about 5,300 metered spaces across seven Community Parking Districts — Downtown, Uptown, Mid-City, Old Town, Pacific Beach, Kearny Mesa and San Ysidro — and La Jolla is not one of them.

City beach parking is free across San Diego, and in August 2026 Council President Joe LaCava and Councilmember Raul Campillo introduced an ordinance to prohibit parking fees at more than fifty city-owned beach and Mission Bay lots. It cleared the Rules Committee unanimously and the Community Planners Committee 22–2, and an original 2036 sunset date was struck. The ordinance does not cover on-street meters elsewhere in the city.

The paid option, and what it costs

The La Jolla Village Merchants Association publishes an all-day rate of $5 by online reservation, rising to about $10 on holiday weekends — it names 4–6 July and the Labor Day weekend specifically. Garages and lots cluster along Prospect Street, Girard Avenue, Ivanhoe Avenue, Fay Avenue and Wall Street, most open 24/7 or roughly 6:30am to 10pm, and many are bookable in advance. Valet on Prospect runs about $12.

Holidays

Meters, yellow commercial zones, green short-term zones and one- and two-hour time-limited zones are not enforced on eleven City holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, a City holiday on 31 March, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

That last category matters here, because La Jolla's village parking is time-limited rather than metered. But read the City's own warning alongside it: on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day weekends, enforcement still patrols the beach communities for other violations.

One more thing worth knowing if you are staying late: in June 2026 the Coastal Commission approved overnight closures across 35+ coastal lots. In La Jolla that covers the Torrey Pines Gliderport, closed 9pm to 4am, and Kellogg Park at La Jolla Shores, closed 10pm to 4am. No Cove or Coast Boulevard lot was named.
