The short version

  • La Valencia, the pink hotel on Prospect Street, opened in 1926 and is marking its 100th year in 2026. Its resort fee is $39 a night.
  • La Jolla Shores Hotel and the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club are the two picks here that sit right on the sand at La Jolla Shores.
  • The Lodge at Torrey Pines charges a $60 daily resort fee plus $55 self-parking or $65 valet. Its neighbor, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, closed for improvements in late September 2026.
  • Grande Colonial's $45 nightly hospitality charge includes valet parking for one car, which is unusual in the Village.
  • The UC San Diego Blue Line trolley has ended at UTC Transit Center since November 21, 2021. MTS Route 30 links UTC with La Jolla and Pacific Beach.

This list is for visitors picking a base in La Jolla, and for anyone planning a staycation. We grouped 11 hotels by where you actually wake up: the Village near the Cove, the beach at La Jolla Shores, or the Torrey Pines and UTC mesa. Every hotel was checked as operating this fall, and fees come from each hotel's own site where it publishes them. The short version: pick the Village to walk everywhere, the Shores to be on the sand with kids, and Torrey Pines for golf, a spa, or a lower rate.

Tiers from hotel and booking-site rates seen October 3, 2026 (Kayak, Tripadvisor). Rates vary a lot by date; these are typical, not quotes.

Village and the Cove: walk to everything

1. La Valencia Hotel (1132 Prospect St). The pink Mediterranean-style hotel opened in 1926 and is celebrating its centennial with events through 2026. The hotel describes itself as steps from La Jolla Cove. The $39 nightly resort fee covers a heated pool, gym, bikes, and golf-cart rides around the Village. Tier: $$$$, with booking-site rates starting around $750 on the dates we checked. Best for: an anniversary or a classic La Jolla stay. Drawback: it is the priciest Village option, and its fee page does not list a parking rate, so ask when you book.

2. Grande Colonial (910 Prospect St). A historic hotel in the middle of the Village, about 0.3 miles from the La Jolla Caves, per the hotel. Its $45 nightly hospitality charge includes off-street valet for one car, which matters in a neighborhood where parking is the main headache. It also offers a limited town car within five miles and golf-cart rides around the Village. Tier: $$$. Best for: walking to dinner and the Cove without moving the car. Drawback: no pets, and it is a block back from the water rather than on it.

3. Pantai Inn (1003 Coast Blvd). A 30-room boutique hotel across from Ellen Browning Scripps Park, with continental breakfast and self-parking included. The one- to three-bedroom villas and cottages have full kitchens, which suits families or longer stays. Tier: $$$, from about $440 on the dates we checked. Best for: an ocean view with parking and breakfast already covered. Drawback: only 30 rooms, so it books up, and a strip of park sits between you and the water.

4. Scripps Inn (555 Coast Blvd S). Fourteen rooms near the Children's Pool and the tide pools, and some rooms have fireplaces or kitchenettes. Tripadvisor showed standard rates of roughly $340 to $630. Tier: $$$. Best for: couples who want a small inn with the ocean out front. Drawback: some 2026 reviews mention noise and dated fixtures, and the rooms rely on ceiling fans, not air conditioning.

5. Empress Hotel La Jolla (7766 Fay Ave). A 73-room boutique hotel on a Village street. The $15 nightly destination fee includes hot breakfast, lobby coffee, and beach chairs, towels and umbrellas while they last. There is valet, and a parking garage across the street. Tier: $$ to $$$, from about $340 on the dates we checked. Best for: a Village base for less, with breakfast covered. Drawback: it sits on a Village street rather than the water, and parking rates are not published online.

La Jolla Shores: on the sand

6. La Jolla Shores Hotel (8110 Camino Del Oro). Beachfront rooms with balconies that look out at the ocean and Scripps Pier, with direct access to the sand. The $50 nightly resort fee covers Wi-Fi, a shuttle around La Jolla, coffee and bikes. Parking is $55 a day and limited, so street parking nearby is the fallback. Tripadvisor showed rates of about $240 to $640. Tier: $$ to $$$. Best for: families who want the calmer beach at the Shores outside the door. Drawback: recent reviews call the decor dated and the air conditioning units noisy.

7. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club (2000 Spindrift Dr). A private-beach resort with lounge chairs, umbrellas and towels on the sand, plus tennis and pickleball courts. Guest parking is included in the nightly resort fee. Pets are allowed only in the Beach Club Cottages. Tier: $$$$, from about $690 on the dates we checked. Best for: a beach week with tennis. Drawback: the price, and the club feel will not suit everyone.

8. Hotel La Jolla, Curio Collection by Hilton (7955 La Jolla Shores Dr). It sits on La Jolla Shores Drive and has a pool with a bar called Hiatus. Self-parking is $50 a day with in-and-out privileges, and there is no valet. Tier: $$ to $$$, from about $350 on the dates we checked. Best for: Hilton points and a pool day near the Shores. Drawback: it is not on the sand, so plan on a walk to the beach.

Torrey Pines and UTC: golf, spa, lower rates

9. The Lodge at Torrey Pines (11480 N Torrey Pines Rd). A 170-room Craftsman-style resort beside Torrey Pines Golf Course. The golf services desk helps with tee times. The $60 daily resort fee covers the gym, sauna, steam room, yoga, guided hikes and e-bikes. Parking is $55 self or $65 valet. One dog up to 50 pounds is welcome for a $150 cleaning fee. Tripadvisor showed standard rooms at about $600 to $1,350. Tier: $$$$. Best for: golf and a quiet, polished stay. Drawback: you will drive to the Village, and recent reviews flag wear in some rooms.

10. Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa (9700 N Torrey Pines Rd). A 210-room hacienda-style resort on 10 acres of gardens, next to UC San Diego. A $26 million renovation of all rooms and public areas finished in February 2024. It has a saltwater pool, a 7,000-square-foot spa, and a pet menu for dogs. The resort fee is $51 a night, with self-parking at $47 and valet at $57. Tier: $$$; Kayak put its average at about $370 in January and about $590 in July. Best for: a spa weekend, or visiting UC San Diego. Drawback: the hotel itself says there are no ocean views and the beach is a drive.

11. Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines (10950 N Torrey Pines Rd). A 394-room hotel along the 18th fairway of Torrey Pines Golf Course, with ocean views over the course. It is usually the lowest rate on this list, from about $250 on the dates we checked. Add a resort fee (about $40 a night, per a resort-fee tracker) and parking ($47 self, $55 valet). Tier: $$. Best for: golfers and conference visitors on a budget. Drawback: reviews often call the rooms outdated, and you need a car for the beach and the Village.

Getting around without a car

The UC San Diego Blue Line trolley has run from downtown to UTC Transit Center since November 21, 2021. From UTC, MTS Route 30 runs through La Jolla and Pacific Beach to Old Town, with trips about every 25 minutes. That works for Estancia and the Hilton, which sit near UC San Diego. In the Village, Grande Colonial and La Valencia offer golf-cart rides around town, and La Jolla Shores Hotel runs a shuttle around La Jolla.
