Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, about 20 miles northeast of downtown, is another favorite, with seven stocked fishing lakes. For tent camping on the sand, see beach camping in San Diego.

Thinking of just parking somewhere? San Diego bans living in vehicles near homes and schools and limits oversize vehicles on streets; read sleeping in a car or RV overnight first.
