The short version

  • Clear plastic bags are capped at 12" x 6" x 12" and must be single-compartment; a non-clear clutch is allowed only up to 5" x 7".
  • Outside food IS permitted for individual consumption — no bulk packaging, pans or pizza boxes.
  • Factory-sealed plastic water up to one litre is fine, as is an empty reusable bottle; glass and alcohol are not.
  • Children under 36 inches tall get in free on an adult's lap — it is a height rule, not an age rule.
  • Petco Park is cashless, with reverse ATMs near sections 108, 135, 208, 303 and the ticket office lobby.

Most of what goes wrong at a ballpark gate is a bag. Petco Park runs a clear-bag policy, and the numbers are specific enough that "it's a small bag, it'll be fine" is not a plan — the security staff are measuring against a published dimension, not a vibe.

The Padres' own entry policy prohibits bags generally, with three exceptions: a single-compartment clear plastic bag no larger than 12" x 6" x 12", medical and infant bags, and a clutch or purse no larger than 5" x 7", which is the only one that may be opaque. Hard-sided coolers are banned outright. A normal backpack does not qualify at any size.

Food and drink: more generous than most parks

This is the part people get backwards. Plenty of major-league parks ban outside food entirely. Petco Park does not. The official policy permits guests to bring food in for individual consumption — explicitly not bulk packaging, pans or pizza boxes — and asks that it be eaten in your seat.

Three more things worth knowing before the gate

  1. 01

Your ticket has to be on your phone

Petco Park is digital-only. The Padres state that print-at-home tickets in any form are no longer accepted for entry. Tickets live in the free MLB Ballpark app and the barcode is scanned off your screen — so charge your phone.

  2. 02

There is no cash anywhere inside

The ballpark is cashless at every concession and retail point. If you arrive with notes, reverse ATMs convert cash to a prepaid card near sections 108, 135, 208 and 303, and in the ticket office lobby.

  3. 03

Small children are free by height

Children under 36 inches tall are admitted free with a ticketed adult, provided they sit on a lap rather than occupying a seat. Note that this is a height threshold, not an age one — most guides get this wrong.

One honest gap: the Padres publish these policies on pages that carry no visible last-updated date, so the only date this page can stand behind is the day we checked them. Policies at any ballpark can change between seasons — if you are reading this a year from now, it is worth a glance at the source before you pack.
