Little shade in summer
The short version
- Iron Mountain is a 5.6-mile round trip with about 1,220 feet of elevation gain (Hiking Guy).
- The trailhead and free lot sit at Poway Road and State Route 67; it fills on weekends.
- There's little shade past the oak-lined first stretch, so winter and spring are best.
- The summit has benches and a viewfinder, with views from the inland mountains to the Pacific on clear days.
- It's a good alternative when the Mt. Woodson / Potato Chip Rock line is long.
Poway's other big hike doesn't have a viral photo rock, which is exactly its appeal. Iron Mountain is a steady, well-graded climb to a summit with benches, a viewfinder and a panorama that, on a clear winter day, runs from the Cuyamacas to the ocean.

- 01
Pick the season
Winter and spring bring green hills and cool air. Summer afternoons here are much hotter than at the beach.
- 02
Time your start
Weekends bring hundreds of cars. Arrive early on a weekday or start late in the afternoon for a sunset summit.
- 03
Carry real water
The oaks near the start are the only real shade. Plan at least a liter per person, more when it's warm.
- 04
Enjoy the top
Sit on the summit benches and use the viewfinder to pick out the peaks before heading back the way you came.
