What each one is like

Old Town Trolley, Ghosts & Gravestones. A narrated night ride on the 'Trolley of the Doomed' with costumed hosts, plus a walk through El Campo Santo Cemetery. You see the outside of the Whaley House only; the tour does not go in. The walking part is on uneven, poorly lit ground, so wear flat shoes. Reservations are required online. They are non-refundable, but you can reschedule up to 24 hours before.

Whaley House. To go inside, book the evening guided tour or the two-hour paranormal investigation (13 and up, includes ghost-hunting gear, per La Jolla Mom's guide updated Sept 2026). The daytime self-guided tour needs no reservation and runs daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Children under 18 need a parent or guardian on every tour. Free parking is at Old Town State Historic Park, a short walk away.

Hotel del Coronado. The Haunted Happenings Tour covers the Kate Morgan legend in about 45 minutes. The hotel lists it as nightly, with a reserve button on its fall page. October also had a nightly Ghost Roast (beach bonfire and stories) through Oct 31 and a Room 502 tour listed for Oct 30; the hotel's page does not say whether these are sold out. See also visiting the Hotel del without staying.

Gaslamp. The Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation runs a 30-minute ghost walk led by a historian that ends inside the Davis-Horton House, plus a self-guided Haunted Stories tour Wednesday through Saturday. Private reseller walks also depart from the area; one listing (Viator, undated) showed a one-hour walk starting at the Balboa Theatre, 868 Fourth Ave, at 8 p.m., but we could not confirm it is running now.

Bars, restaurants and hotels change owners, hours, menus and even team loyalties faster than anyone can keep up. Call ahead or check the place's own website or social accounts before you go.
