Are San Diego beaches lifeguarded in winter?
Yes, but only at the City's permanent stations — Ocean Beach, South Mission, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, North Pacific Beach, Children's Pool, La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores — generally from 9 a.m. to dusk; the extra summer towers come down after the season.

Do I need to worry about rip currents in San Diego, and what do I do if I'm caught in one?
Yes — rip currents cause over 80% of surf-beach lifeguard rescues nationally; if one pulls you out, don't fight it: swim parallel to the shore or float and wave for help, and swim near an open lifeguard tower in the first place.

Is it safe to swim at Imperial Beach?
Often not: the Imperial Beach shoreline was closed again on September 28, 2026 because sewage-contaminated Tijuana River water was reaching the ocean — check sdbeachinfo.com the day you go, and expect more closures in an El Niño winter because rain overwhelms treatment capacity.

Is there a jellyfish season in San Diego, and how do you treat a sting?
Mostly summer and early fall, when warm water pushes them in. Purple-striped jellies are around all year and sting hardest. For a sting: rinse with seawater, pull off tentacles, then use heat. Skip the vinegar.

When is stingray season in San Diego, and what do you do if you get stung?
Summer, especially June to August in warm water, though warm fall days count too. 2026 is near-record: lifeguards treated 1,200+ stings by mid-August. Shuffle your feet, and if you're stung, soak in hot water at a lifeguard tower.

Cedar Creek Falls: you need a permit, and here's why rangers check
Cedar Creek Falls, east of Ramona, requires a $6 permit from Recreation.gov for up to five people. It's a hot 5-6 mile round trip with a steep climb out. Cliff jumping and alcohol are banned, and summer heat closures are common.

How to spot a rip current before you get in the water
Look from high ground for a dark, narrow gap in the line of breaking waves, or a patch of choppy water heading straight out. Watch for several minutes — and know that rip currents form on calm, sunny days, not just rough ones.

Is it safe to swim after it rains in San Diego?
No. San Diego County advises staying out of the ocean and bays for 72 hours after rain stops. The trigger is a fifth of an inch, and no warning signs go up for it — the beach will look completely normal.

Coyotes live in nearly every San Diego neighborhood that borders a canyon. Keep cats indoors, don't leave small dogs out alone at dawn, dusk or night, and haze any coyote that doesn't leave. Nobody removes roaming ones.

Do I need Mexican insurance to drive to Tijuana?

Can a hurricane actually hit San Diego?
A direct hurricane is extremely rare — the only one on record with hurricane-force winds here was in 1858 — but tropical storm remnants, heavy rain and big southerly swells are a real fall risk through November 30, and El Niño makes them more likely.

Does a wet El Niño winter mean fire season is over in San Diego?
No — El Niño's rain mostly arrives December through March, and San Diego's most dangerous fire window is fall, when Santa Ana winds hit vegetation that's driest from late September to mid-November; expect Red Flag Warnings and possible SDG&E power shutoffs until the rains actually come.

The San Diego roads that flood in the rain, and what to do if you hit one
The repeat offenders are the Mission Valley river crossings (Fashion Valley Road, Avenida del Rio, Camino de la Reina, Mission Center Road), Sorrento Valley Road at Carmel Mountain Road, and low spots in Otay Mesa — and the rule is simple: never drive into water you can't see the bottom of.

Do I need flood insurance for El Niño, and is it too late to buy it?
It isn't too late yet, but the clock matters: a new federal flood policy normally takes 30 days to kick in, and your homeowners or renters policy almost certainly doesn't cover flooding at all.
