Brown was the original colour from 1969. They dropped it for blue in 1991 and brought it back as the primary look in 2020, after years of fans asking for it.

The short version

  • Brown was the Padres' primary colour for their first 22 seasons, 1969 through 1990.
  • The club switched to blue in 1991 and stayed away from brown as a primary for nearly three decades.
  • Brown and gold returned as the primary identity for the 2020 season, unveiled on November 10, 2019.
  • The return followed sustained fan campaigning rather than a rebrand imposed from above.
  • It is the only brown primary in Major League Baseball, which is exactly why people here like it.

Because it was theirs first. Brown is the colour the Padres started with in 1969, and it stayed the primary identity through the 1990 season — the club's first 22 years. Then it went away, and the story of how it came back is one of the more genuinely fan-driven things in American sport.

The wilderness years

From 1991 the Padres wore blue, with periodic flirtations — alternate jerseys, throwback days, a camouflage set. Brown kept reappearing as a novelty while the everyday uniform stayed conventional. For a long stretch the official line was that brown did not sell.

Fans disagreed, loudly and for years. The Padres confirmed in January 2019 that brown would return, and unveiled the new uniforms on November 10, 2019 for the 2020 season. It is now the everyday identity, not a throwback.

What brown actually refers to

The colours are usually explained as a nod to the Franciscan friars who founded the California missions — the same source as the team's name. The Padre is a friar, the Swinging Friar mascot dates to the Pacific Coast League era of the club's name, and the brown is the habit. Whether the 1969 choice was really that considered or just what looked good in 1969 is a question we cannot settle from a primary source, so we will leave it as the traditional explanation rather than assert it as fact.
