Have the Padres ever won a World Series?
No. They've reached two — 1984 against Detroit and 1998 against the Yankees — and lost both. The franchise began play in 1969 and is still waiting.

The short version
- The Padres began play in 1969 as an expansion franchise and have never won a World Series.
- They have reached two: 1984, losing to the Detroit Tigers 4–1, and 1998, swept by the New York Yankees 4–0.
- Ten postseason appearances in all: 1984, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2020, 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
- The deepest recent run was 2022, when they beat the Mets and then the Dodgers before losing the NLCS to Philadelphia.
- A Pacific Coast League team also called the San Diego Padres existed from 1936 to 1968 — Ted Williams played for it as a teenager.
No, and it is the defining fact of being a Padres fan. The franchise has played since 1969 and has been to the World Series twice, losing both. That is the honest answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is thinking of the 1984 pennant, which is a different thing.
The whole postseason history, in five moments
Ten postseason appearances across 58 seasons, and no title.
1984: the one that came out of nowhere
The 1984 team won the National League pennant by beating the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS after losing the first two games — still one of the great comebacks in league history — then ran into a Detroit Tigers team that had started the season 35–5. The Tigers took the World Series four games to one.
1998: 98 wins, then the buzzsaw
The 1998 side won the pennant over Atlanta and met a New York Yankees team that had just won 114 regular-season games. The Yankees swept it 4–0. It remains the most successful Padres season by wins, and it is remembered here far more fondly than a sweep usually is.

The recent stretch
The modern Padres are a genuinely good team, which is not something you could say for long stretches of the club's history. They reached the postseason in 2020, 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — three straight Octobers to close that run. The 2022 team went furthest, beating the Mets in the Wild Card Series and then the Dodgers in the Division Series before losing the NLCS to Philadelphia.
