The San Diego museums that close early in the week

4 min read Checked September 9, 2026

Monday is not the trap day — Tuesday and Wednesday are. The Museum of Art closes Wednesdays, Mingei Mondays, the Timken Monday and Tuesday, and MOPA Monday through Wednesday. The big Balboa Park museums are open daily.

Thursday to Sunday only

The short version

  • The Natural History Museum, Fleet Science Center, Air & Space Museum and Museum of Us are open seven days a week.
  • San Diego Museum of Art closes Wednesdays — not Mondays, which catches people out.
  • The Timken closes Monday and Tuesday; Mingei closes Monday; MOPA is only open Thursday through Sunday.
  • The New Children's Museum closes Tuesdays, and the Zoo, the Midway and Birch Aquarium never close weekly at all.
  • Balboa Park's own visitor site publishes no hours-at-a-glance table, which is why this catches people.

The received wisdom is that museums close on Mondays, so a Monday in San Diego is a write-off. That is close to backwards here. The four biggest Balboa Park institutions are open every day of the week, and the closures that will actually ruin your plan land on Tuesday and Wednesday.

What closes, and when

From each institution's own visitor page, checked September 2026. All also close for Thanksgiving and Christmas; several publish one-off closure dates.

The one that is open when nothing else is

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance states it plainly: the Zoo and the Safari Park are open every day of the year, rain or shine, including all holidays. So is the USS Midway, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you have one fixed day and it happens to be a bad one for museums, those are the reliable fallbacks.

Free days worth planning around

Mingei is free for everyone on the third Tuesday of the month, and $5 for everyone after 5pm on Fridays. Its ground floor, with the shop and café, is always free. The Timken is free every day it is open — which makes its Monday–Tuesday closure the one most worth checking, because there is no ticket price to soften the wasted trip.
