Why are San Diego gas prices so high, and where can I find cheaper gas?
The county average was $5.866 on Nov. 8, 2026, about $1.85 above the national average. California's taxes and fuel rules add roughly $1.20+ a gallon, and 2026's Iran war pushed oil up. Use a price map app.

Why San Diego pays more
- Taxes. California's state excise tax is about 61 cents a gallon, the highest in the country, on top of the 18.4-cent federal tax and sales tax.
- Climate programs. Cap-and-trade and the Low Carbon Fuel Standard add roughly 50 cents a gallon, by most estimates.
- A special blend. California requires cleaner-burning CARB gasoline that few out-of-state refineries make, so the state works like a fuel island.
- Fewer refineries. Closures and outages in 2025–26 tightened supply further.
- World oil. The war on Iran that began Feb. 28, 2026 lifted crude prices everywhere.

How to pay less
Practical ways to save
- 01
Check a price map
GasBuddy, Waze and the AAA app show station prices near you; the spread across the county can be more than 80 cents a gallon on the same day.
- 02
Use a warehouse club or discount brand
Costco, Sam's Club, ARCO and other discount stations usually post the lowest prices; ARCO often charges a debit-transaction fee.
- 03
Stack rewards
Grocery-store fuel points and gas-category credit cards knock off a few cents to a dollar a gallon.
- 04
Fill up before the trend turns
Prices have been falling since early October 2026; local averages tend to rise again in spring when summer-blend gas returns.
