How to get back across the border from Tijuana faster

5 min read Checked September 29, 2026

Use the right lane: with an RFID-enabled document (U.S. passport card, SENTRI card, or newer green card or border crossing card) you can use the Ready Lane, which is faster than the general lanes; SENTRI members โ€” $120 for five years โ€” get the fastest lanes of all. Check live waits at bwt.cbp.gov before you head north.

The short version

  • San Ysidro handles roughly 70,000 northbound vehicles and 20,000 northbound pedestrians a day โ€” among the busiest land border crossings in the world.
  • The Ready Lane (open since December 2011, 24 hours) accepts only RFID-enabled documents: U.S. passport card, SENTRI card, and the newer green card and border crossing card.
  • A passport book alone doesn't qualify for the Ready Lane; a U.S. passport card, sold by the State Department alongside or instead of the book, does.
  • SENTRI costs $120 for five years since October 1, 2024, and is free for minors whose parents are enrolled or enrolling at the same time.
  • Walking? PedEast is the main pedestrian crossing; PedWest by Las Americas outlets has run limited hours since reopening in 2023.

Going south into Tijuana is usually quick. Coming back north is where the hours go โ€” and the biggest lever you control is which lane you're allowed to use. That's decided by the document in your hand, not by when you leave.

Why your passport book doesn't get you in the Ready Lane

The Ready Lane works because officers' systems read your document's chip as you pull up. The documents CBP lists are the U.S. passport card, the SENTRI card, and the newer versions of the permanent resident card and border crossing card. Unlike SENTRI lanes, a Ready Lane car can carry a mix of those documents โ€” as long as everyone has one. If one passenger only has a passport book, the car belongs in the general lanes.
