The worst hour to drive in San Diego, and the best
4pm on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. TomTom's 2025 data has a 10 km city drive taking about 15½ minutes then, double the 7½ minutes it takes at 3am. The morning peak is gentler, topping out near 12 minutes at 8am.

The short version
- Midweek 4pm is the slowest hour of the week: about 15 min 20–30 s to drive 10 km, per TomTom's 2025 data
- 3am is the fastest, at about 7 min 30–40 s for the same 10 km
- The evening rush is far worse than the morning one: 71.3% congestion against 42.5% (TomTom 2025)
- 19 of the county's 20 worst freeway bottlenecks in 2024 were afternoon jams (Caltrans District 11)
- Friday's rush starts earlier but peaks lower, and weekends barely move off 10–11 minutes all day
If you can choose when to drive across San Diego, the answer is simple: not between 3 and 6pm on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. TomTom's traffic index timed a 10 km drive on San Diego's roads for every hour of every day in 2025. At 4pm midweek it took about 15½ minutes. At 3am it took about 7½. The single worst day of the year was Wednesday, September 17, when 4pm traffic ran at 130% congestion.

Three things stand out. The morning bump is small and short: midweek, a 10 km drive goes from about 9 minutes at 6am to about 12 at 8am, and is back near 10½ by 9am. The afternoon is a wall: about 11½ minutes at 2pm, 14½ at 3pm, 15½ at 4pm, 15 at 5pm, then 12 at 6pm and under 11 by 7pm. And weekends hardly have a rush at all.

Caltrans' own freeway sensors tell the same story. Of the 20 worst bottlenecks in San Diego County in 2024, 19 were afternoon jams. In April to June 2025, morning-peak delay fell 25.7% from a year earlier while afternoon delay rose 3%, and delay at 2pm on weekdays rose 12.1%: the afternoon rush is creeping earlier. Rules of thumb the data supports
Timing a drive across town
- 01
Beat the afternoon: before 2pm or after 7pm
Midweek, a 10 km drive takes about 11½ minutes at 2pm and under 11 at 7pm, against 15½ at 4pm.
- 02
Monday and Friday mornings are the light ones
At 8am a 10 km drive takes about 10¾ minutes on Monday and 10¼ on Friday, against about 12¼ Tuesday to Thursday.
- 03
Friday afternoons start early and end early
Friday's 2pm is the slowest 2pm of the week (about 12¼ minutes), and its worst hour is 3pm rather than 4pm. By 5pm Friday is lighter than any other weekday.
- 04
On weekends, midday is the slow part
Saturday and Sunday peak between 11am and 1pm at about 11¼ minutes per 10 km, about the same as a weekday lunchtime and far below the weekday afternoon.
