Why is San Diego called "America's Finest City"?
It started as a comeback. When Republicans moved their 1972 convention from San Diego to Miami Beach, Mayor Pete Wilson declared that week "America's Finest City Week" to lift spirits. The event became annual and the nickname stuck.

The short version
- San Diego was set to host the 1972 Republican National Convention in August 1972.
- In May 1972 the party moved it to Miami Beach, amid the ITT donation scandal and doubts about the Sports Arena and hotel space.
- Mayor Pete Wilson proclaimed the convention week "America's Finest City Week" and threw the city its own celebration.
- The week became an annual event, and the slogan became the city's nickname.
- Wilson popularized the phrase rather than inventing it: a 1985 Los Angeles Times article traced it to a Look magazine line about "one of America's finest cities."
You'll see "America's Finest City" on city signs, in news copy and on the occasional T-shirt. It sounds like tourism-board boasting, but it began as something closer to a shrug and a party after San Diego lost a national spotlight.

What happened in 1972
San Diego was chosen to host the Republican convention that would renominate Richard Nixon in August 1972. In May the party moved it to Miami Beach. Voice of San Diego's history of the episode points to the ITT scandal, over a corporate pledge tied to the San Diego bid, along with worries that the Sports Arena and the city's hotel supply weren't big enough.
Rather than sulk, Mayor Pete Wilson proclaimed the week the convention would have been held "America's Finest City Week," with civic events to lift the city's mood. It was repeated the next year and the phrase became the city's semi-official nickname.
Another naming story: why it's called San Diego. And for a different local name puzzle, why it's called the Gaslamp Quarter.
