How much is the turf replacement rebate in San Diego, and how do I get it?
Most San Diego County homeowners can get a base turf replacement rebate of $2 per square foot (250 to 5,000 sq ft) through SoCal WaterSmart, plus $100 per new tree for up to five trees. You must apply and get approval before you touch the grass, the lawn has to be alive, and artificial turf earns nothing.

The short version
- SoCal WaterSmart pays a base $2 per sq ft for 250-5,000 sq ft of living lawn, per the San Diego County Water Authority's Spring 2026 flyer
- Trees planted in the project earn $100 each, up to 5 trees, and must be 15-gallon or larger with a receipt
- You get 180 days from approval to finish; the rebate check arrives 8-10 weeks after the post-project review
- Unincorporated County residents can add $1 per sq ft for native plants, but the County asked new applicants to pause in summer 2026
- Dead lawns, bare dirt and artificial turf do not qualify, so don't stop watering before you apply
Most San Diego County homeowners can get $2 per square foot to replace a living lawn with water-wise plants, through the regional SoCal WaterSmart program. A 1,000-square-foot front lawn works out to about $2,000, plus $100 for each new tree (up to five). The San Diego County Water Authority's Spring 2026 flyer calls $2 the starting rate, with supplemental money in some places depending on grants and where you live. We checked the program rules, the Water Authority flyer, the City of San Diego rebate page and the County's Waterscape Rebate page on November 3, 2026. How much is the San Diego turf rebate per square foot?
The base rate is $2 per square foot, paid by the Metropolitan Water District through SoCal WaterSmart. The SoCal WaterSmart FAQ says Metropolitan currently allows $2 per square foot, for 250 to 5,000 square feet at a home. Extra money depends on where you are. The table shows the layers we could confirm on official pages; use the Estimate Your Rebate tool on socalwatersmart.com to see the exact amount for your address. Why bother: the City of San Diego estimates a lawn uses about 44 gallons of water per square foot each year (see the 2027 water rate change), and the Water Authority's free Landscape Makeover classes (virtual, about 60-75 minutes) help you plan the new yard.

What does my new yard need to qualify?
- At least 3 plants per 100 sq ft, planted in the ground; potted plants don't count, existing trees in the area do
- A stormwater feature: rain garden, dry creek bed, swale, berm, or rain barrel/cistern (barrels need full gutters and downspouts)
- A 3-inch ring of mulch around every plant, and all bare soil covered with mulch, rock or decomposed granite
- No overhead spray sprinklers left in the finished area: convert to drip, bubblers or rotating nozzles, or cap them and hand-water
- Permeable surfaces only: no patios, decks or concrete; flagstone paths are fine if not set in cement
- Not allowed: artificial turf, turf-looking grasses, invasive plants (per the Cal-IPC list)
The finished yard needs at least three in-ground plants per 100 square feet and mulch over all bare soil.
