The short version

  • Presidio Park is the site of the San Diego Presidio and Mission, founded in 1769 as the first European settlements on the U.S. West Coast.
  • The mission moved up the river valley a few years later, and the presidio was in ruins by 1835; no original buildings survive.
  • George Marston bought the hill in 1907 and gave the park to the city in 1929.
  • The Junípero Serra Museum, a Spanish Revival building by William Templeton Johnson, is run by the San Diego History Center; its exhibit covers the Kumeyaay and European settlement.
  • The museum is open weekends 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (plus summer Fridays), by suggested $10 donation; the building isn't ADA accessible.

Thousands of people a day walk Old Town's shops without looking up at the hill behind them. That hill is where San Diego, and European California, began. The original adobe walls are long gone, but the view explains why Spain picked it.
