The short version
- Volcan Valley Apple Farm: Saturdays 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Sept 6 to mid-October 2026; $5 per person (6+), $20 per u-pick bag, no reservations, leashed dogs welcome.
- Julian Farm & Orchard: Friday–Sunday 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Sept 4 to Nov 15, 2026; reservations required, guided groups of up to 25, no dogs.
- Varieties ripen in waves: Golden Delicious and Empire in September, Fuji and Rome in October, Gold Rush into November.
- Julian sits around 4,200 feet, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from downtown San Diego by car.
- Go early: fall Saturdays bring heavy traffic on the two-lane roads into town.
Julian is San Diego County's apple town — a former gold-mining village in the mountains with orchards, pie shops and actual fall weather. The u-pick window is short and each orchard runs it differently, so check which kind of trip you're planning before you drive up.

Getting there
Julian sits at roughly 4,200 feet in the Cuyamaca Mountains, reached by Highway 78 through Ramona or Highway 79 from I-8. Both are two-lane mountain roads. On fall weekends, traffic into town backs up by late morning, and parking on Main Street fills fast — orchard visits in the morning, pie in the afternoon works better than the reverse.

Check before you go
Orchards close early when the crop is picked out, and the season can end sooner than posted.
