There is no single price for moving to San Diego, so we pulled route-specific quote ranges from moveBuddha, which says its numbers come from a monthly dataset of 1,500+ live quotes from its mover network (pages updated November 2, 2026). Then we checked the City of San Diego and state rules that add cost or risk once the truck or container actually arrives. Military? Start with our PCS to San Diego checklist, since many PCS moves are government-arranged.

Those are moveBuddha's ranges, not guarantees; the site says prices move with dates and availability. Its Chicago page also says mid-May to mid-September is peak season and points to October through March for lower rates. Its truck figures leave out add-ons: for Chicago it estimates the real total runs $600-$1,200 above the base rate once fuel, insurance (about $38 a day) and equipment are added. For a move within San Diego, FreightWaves' San Diego page (updated October 30, 2026) puts local movers at about $200 an hour, with typical totals of roughly $800 for a one-bedroom and $1,400 for a two-bedroom. It doesn't name its data source, so get written quotes.

Container and truck quotes assume you pack and load yourself; full-service quotes rise with packing.
Do I need a permit to park a moving container on a San Diego street?
Yes, if it is in the City of San Diego and sits on the street, sidewalk or a public parking space. The city's Information Bulletin 718 (July 2026) requires a Traffic Control Permit. On your own driveway it isn't needed, according to PODS' San Diego guide (August 25, 2026), though HOA or lease rules may still apply.
Getting a City of San Diego container permit
- 01
Apply online
Fill out Form DS-269 with a simple traffic control plan and submit both through the Development Services Department's Traffic Control Permit portal.
- 02
Apply early
The city requires at least 3 working days' notice. PODS says new applications can take about 15 business days to process, so apply weeks ahead.
- 03
Pay the fees
$87.68 per week (one week maximum) plus an $87.68 processing fee. If the container blocks metered spaces, add $20 per meter per day.
- 04
Post signs 72 hours ahead
Put up Tow-Away/No Parking signs 72 hours before the container arrives. Don't place it at a painted curb, and keep 15 feet from a fire hydrant.
How do I check that a mover is licensed in California?
Many guides still point to the CPUC, but the CPUC says household goods carrier authority moved to the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS) on July 1, 2018 under SB 19. Use the Movers License Search on bhgs.dca.ca.gov for a mover based in California. For moves across state lines, check the company in FMCSA's Registered Mover Database too.

California's mover bureau says verbal and internet estimates aren't allowed; written estimates need an in-person look.
- No verbal or online-only estimates: for moves within California, BHGS says written estimates require a visual inspection, and movers must give a 'Not to Exceed' price.
- Price changes need a change order: BHGS says a change order can't be used just because the mover underestimated.
- Interstate valuation default: FMCSA says Full Value Protection is the default. The free option, Released Value, pays no more than 60 cents per pound, which comes to $15 for a 25-pound TV.
- Damage claims (in-state): file in writing within 9 months of delivery, per BHGS.
- Enforcement is real: a June 2026 BHGS sweep in the Bay Area and Southern California issued 30 citations totaling $110,230 to movers working without a license and/or proper insurance (DCA, July 9, 2026).
- Once you're here: leftover furniture? See how to get rid of a couch or mattress. Bringing a car? The DMV gives you 20 days to register it in California.
