San Diego's hidden bars: where the secret doors are and how to get in

6 min read Checked November 6, 2026 Report a correction

San Diego's best-known hidden bars are Noble Experiment (behind a wall of kegs inside Neighborhood, 777 G St), False Idol (through a walk-in cooler in Craft & Commerce, Little Italy), Prohibition (a fake law office door at 548 Fifth Ave) and Realm of the 52 Remedies (inside Common Theory on Convoy). Most are tiny, so book ahead where they take reservations.

The short version

  • Noble Experiment hides behind a stack of kegs near the restrooms of Neighborhood at 777 G St; OpenTable lists reservations for parties of 4 or fewer up to two weeks out.
  • False Idol, a tiki bar built with Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove, is entered through a walk-in cooler in Craft & Commerce, 675 W Beech St; it books only through its own website.
  • Prohibition's door is marked as Eddie O'Hare's law office at 548 Fifth Ave in the Gaslamp.
  • Raised by Wolves in Westfield UTC is entered by a rotating fireplace.
  • Realm of the 52 Remedies, inside Common Theory on Convoy Street, was a 2026 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bar.

Half the fun of a speakeasy is finding the door. San Diego has an unusually good collection, many from the same local group, CH Projects, behind Noble Experiment, False Idol, Raised by Wolves and Youngblood. Here's where each entrance actually is, so you can walk in like you've done it before.

If you only do one

  • For the theater of it: False Idol. Pufferfish lamps, a wall of skulls, thunder and rain effects. It was built with Martin Cate of San Francisco's Smuggler's Cove.
  • For cocktails first: Noble Experiment. Small and dark, with a skull-papered wall and a bartender's-choice tradition.
  • For a night out with music: Prohibition, with jazz and a dress code.
  • Away from downtown: Realm of the 52 Remedies on Convoy, then dinner on the street. Here's what to know about Convoy.

Prefer a bar where nobody's performing? Try the old-school dive bars. For views, see the rooftop bars.

Is this still right?

We last checked this tip against its sources on November 6, 2026, and we re-research every tip on a schedule. Things in San Diego change, sometimes overnight.

Bars, restaurants and hotels change owners, hours, menus and even team loyalties faster than anyone can keep up. Call ahead or check the place's own website or social accounts before you go.
