Palomar Observatory, run by Caltech on Palomar Mountain in North County, is free to visit during the day, and you can stand in the dome of the 200-inch Hale Telescope, for decades the largest working telescope in the world. We checked Caltech's visitor and FAQ pages on November 4, 2026. The address is 35899 Canfield Road, Palomar Mountain, CA 92060.

What can you see at Palomar Observatory without a tour?

  • The Hale Telescope from the enclosed Visitors Gallery inside the dome, up 70 steps. The dome is kept at nighttime temperature, so bring a jacket.
  • The museum and Greenway Visitor Center, about 130 feet from the parking lot and wheelchair accessible.
  • A free audioguide at ag.palomar.caltech.edu, in your phone's browser (no app). Bring headphones and charge for 30-60 minutes; there's free Wi-Fi in the Visitor Center and Gallery.
  • Step-free gallery access for visitors with limited mobility at 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. daily when staff are available; check in at the gift shop first. Wheelchair access to the dome isn't available right now.

Does Palomar Observatory offer guided tours?

Guided tours are the only way onto the observing floor under the Hale Telescope. Caltech's audioguide events page listed weekend tours from April 11 to November 1, 2026, about an hour long, with limited tickets and not aimed at children under 5. Caltech's FAQ calls the charge 'small', but it doesn't list the price. That season has now ended, and the 2027 dates weren't posted as of November 4, 2026. For a night on the mountain, outside groups sometimes run trips: the Fleet Science Center's $175, 21+ 'Sky Tonight' trip on October 17, 2026 included a private dome tour and stargazing.
