San Diego vs Los Angeles: which should I visit?

6 min read Checked November 3, 2026 Report a correction

Pick San Diego for a beach-and-zoo trip with drier weather and better water-quality grades at its beaches. Pick Los Angeles for Disneyland, Hollywood and cheaper transit fares. At the coast the weather is nearly identical (NOAA puts August highs at 77.3°F at San Diego's airport and 76.7°F at LAX), hotel rates are within a few dollars of each other, and the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner links the two in about 3 hours, so many visitors can do both.

The short version

  • NOAA 1991-2020 normals: San Diego airport gets 9.79 inches of rain a year, LAX 12.23 and downtown LA 14.25, and downtown LA averages 84.0°F in August against San Diego's 77.3°F.
  • Heal the Bay's 2025-26 report put Santa Monica Pier No. 2 on its statewide Beach Bummer list, while San Diego County beaches, including Mission Beach at Belmont Park and Sunset Cliffs, made its 21-beach Honor Roll.
  • LA Metro charges $1.75 a ride with a $5 daily cap; San Diego's MTS charges $3 a ride and $7 for a day pass (since Oct 1, 2026).
  • Disneyland's 1-day, 1-park ticket costs $104-$224 from Oct 6, 2026; SeaWorld San Diego starts at $59.99 online and LEGOLAND California at $69.
  • The Pacific Surfliner runs 13 daily round trips between the cities, and most San Diego-to-LA Union Station trains take 2h 56m to 3h 12m; there's no service at all on Nov 7-8, 2026.

If your trip is about beaches, the zoo and an easy pace, choose San Diego. If it's about Disneyland, Hollywood and big-city range, choose Los Angeles. On weather and hotel prices the two are much closer than people think. The comparison below uses the same official sources for both cities: NOAA climate normals, STR hotel data, the transit agencies' own fare pages and Heal the Bay's water-quality grades.

Is the weather better in San Diego or Los Angeles?

At the beach, the weather is nearly identical, and San Diego is drier. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals put San Diego's airport and LAX within a degree of each other almost every month. The difference shows up inland: downtown LA averages 84.0°F in August and 83.0°F in September, against 77.3°F and 77.2°F at San Diego's bayside airport. San Diego also gets less rain, 9.79 inches a year against 12.23 at LAX and 14.25 downtown. In NOAA's old Coastal Water Temperature Guide, the ocean ran within a degree or two at Scripps Pier and Santa Monica all year. For San Diego's month-by-month detail, see the best time to visit.

Which city is easier to get around without a car?

LA's transit is cheaper per ride; San Diego's is pricier, but our guides cover car-free routes. LA Metro charges $1.75 a ride, caps tap-to-ride spending at $5 a day and $18 a week, and includes free transfers within two hours. San Diego's MTS rose to $3 a ride on October 1, 2026, with a $7 adult day pass, and riders 18 and under ride free with a Youth PRONTO account. In San Diego you can reach downtown from the airport for one fare (how); whether you need a car depends on your plans, which we cover in do I need a car.

Can you do San Diego and Los Angeles in one trip?

  • By train: the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner has run 13 daily round trips between San Diego and LA since January 26, 2026. On the timetable we checked, most San Diego-to-LA Union Station trains take 2h 56m to 3h 12m, and the fastest takes 2h 46m.
  • Train fares are dynamic: Wanderu lists an average Surfliner fare of about $37, La Jolla Mom puts coach to Anaheim at about $30-$40, and Rome2rio shows $70-$110. Booking ahead is cheaper.
  • No trains Nov 7-8, 2026: Pacific Surfliner has no service anywhere between San Diego and San Luis Obispo that weekend, and no bus bridges.
  • By car: Rome2rio puts the drive at about 120 miles and 2 hours 7 minutes without traffic. Both SAN and LAX add a $12-a-day rental car facility charge, capped at five days.
  • Disneyland is in between: Anaheim is a Surfliner stop, so a Disney day fits on the way north or south.

Our take: first-timers with 3-4 days and kids, or anyone after a beach week, will find San Diego simpler. Disney, film and music fans should base in LA. With a week, do both by train. Prices barely separate them: LA's hotels averaged $219.53 for January to September 2026, against $212 in San Diego for 2025, though in a summer week San Diego can cost more ($241 vs $198 in late June 2025). Plan your San Diego costs with our 2026 trip budget, and if you're short on days, see day trips from San Diego and our 3-day itinerary.
